Topic is Equal Opportunity or a Fair One?
Equal Opportunity is the abolition of prejudicial hiring and promotion in the American workplace. No longer will we perpetuate division amongst ourselves by checking off boxes on an application that pertain to one's ethnicity, gender, or race. Whichever opportunity presented or posed by an employer is open to all who qualify within their professions. An employee's or prospect's accomplishments, credentials, and merits are the basis for what the term "Equal Opportunity" stands for. It does not limit one's opportunity on the account of their identity. Equal Opportunity should never be misconstrued with "Equal Outcome" as it defeats the central purpose of "Equal Opportunity". For example, promoting diversity for the sake of diversity is in direct contrast with Equal Opportunity. In this example a certain group of individuals are placed in a higher, or lower, value based on their identities. This places a limit on certain individuals, thus, eliminating Equal Opportunity. Diversity of thought and experience is a strong tool that any group can benefit, however, the most powerful tool any group can utilize to achieve a common goal is unity.
Topic is Ethical Relativism:
Is requiring the surviving spouse of a man who dies to commit suicide based on tradition and societal rules in India at her husband's funeral by jumping into his cremation fire right? What about stealing? Is it justice in some middle eastern countries to cut off the thief's right hand (because in some of the countries they wipe their rear end with their left) if they are caught or accused of stealing? How about adultery? In some middle eastern countries, wives who are caught or accused of infidelity are publically stoned to death.Depending on where you live in this vast world, ethical relativism in many different countries has established a clear guide for their citizens between right and wrong.
For those of us lucky people who live in the more diverse United States, thankfully the true examples listed above, most of us here consider being morally wrong. In my opinion, the best thing about ethical relativism, in the US, would be that the majority of our society has a clear understanding of the difference between things that are right or wrong.
Unfortunately, though in today's day and age with social media, the news, and so on, ethical relativism in our country is influenced more by what people watch or see on their phone or computer, rather than life experience.
Moving forward in the US with positive and negative sides of ethical relativism in our society, it would be interesting to see how the current views on police, gun violence, and illegal immigration views would change if social media and the news were not available for a year.
