Case Narrative

You are the Senior Manager of Problem Solving and Decision Making for County Farms Health Care Association.

County Farms Health Care Association, a private rural health care provider, is concerned about the shortage of nurses the health care profession is projecting for the future. To learn the current degree of job satisfaction among nurses, the association sponsored a study of hospital nurses throughout the country.

As part of this study, 50 nurses in a sample indicated their degree of satisfaction with their work, their pay, and their opportunities for promotion. Each of the three aspects of satisfaction was measured on a scale from zero to l00, with larger values indicating higher degrees of satisfaction. The data collected also showed the type of hospital where these nurses are employed. The types of hospitals were Private, Veterans Administration (VA), and University hospitals. A portion of the data is shown in Table 1. The complete data set is attached. The file name is BUSI5413_County_Farms_Data.xlsx (n = 50).

Using the Case Narrative, the Excel database provided (BUSI5413_County_Farms_Data.xlsx), prepare a formal Report to Management. The Report will be delivered to the Compensation and Benefits Committee of County Farms Health Care Association. Members of the Compensation and Benefits Committee are,

• Chairman of the Board, County Farms Health Care Association (former President of Little Town Bank and Trust).

• Board Member 1, (big customer of Little Town Bank and Trust),

• Board Member 2, (owner of 6,000-acre cattle ranch south of Little Town),

• Board Member 3, (son-in-law of Board Member 2, an Early Western American History graduate of (pick your state west of the Mississippi) State university),

• Vice President - Human Resources, County Farms Health Care Association,

• Chief Operating Officer, County Farms Health Care Association,

• Reimbursement Manager, County Farms Health Care Association.

Prepare and deliver the formal Managerial Report as instructed. It would be best if you assumed that members of the committee are not experienced in data analysis. Therefore, your report should be prepared for the unsophisticated data consumer. Concisely describe the results.

The Managerial Report requirements include the tabular, graphical presentation or informative information requested and a concise narrative of what the data tells the unsophisticated reader.

• Satisfaction with work, pay, and opportunities for promotion.

Assignment Description

Use methods of descriptive statistics to summarize the data. Present the summaries that will be beneficial in communicating the results to others. Thoroughly discuss your findings. Specifically, comment on the following questions,

• Based on the entire data set and the three job satisfaction variables, what aspect of the job is most satisfying for the nurses? What appears to be the least satisfying? In what area(s), if any, do you feel improvements should be made? Discuss.

• Based on descriptive measures of variability, what measure of job satisfaction appears to generate the greatest difference of opinion among the nurses? Explain.

• What can be learned about the types of hospitals? Does any particular type of hospital seem to have better levels of job satisfaction than the other types? Do your results suggest any recommendations for learning about and improving job satisfaction? Discuss.

• Comment on the relationships between Type of hospital and the Satisfaction variables. What are the stronger relationships? Weaker relationships?

• What additional descriptive statistics and insights can you use to learn about and possibly improve job satisfaction?

Assignment Requirements

Use tabular and graphical methods of descriptive statistics to help management develop a customer profile and evaluate the promotional campaigns impact. At a minimum, your report should include the following, well presented:

• Percent frequency distribution for Type and each key variable.

• A histogram and a pie chart for Type and each key variable. (country folk love pie!)

• A cross-tabulation of the data.

• Descriptive statistics concerning the relationship between the variables.

• Does the data suggest any customer focus for Sugarland Outfitters? For Planet Pants Depot?

• Comment on the sample size and strengths and weaknesses of the data. What suggestions do you have for the data collection?

• Your concise commentary on any similarities or differences present in the data will be of considerable value.
