W24 MGMT9820-01 Group Case Study #2 Worth 20% Due on Friday March 28 no later than 11:59 pm. Problem It is August 2023. It has been a very hot and humid summer. You are the Health & Safety Representative for a construction company from Niagara Falls. Your company has won a contract to undertake some demolition work at Bruce Nuclear Power Station out near Kincardine, Ontario. Your crews have been working there all summer long. One of your workers is a man named Fred. Fred has been with your company for more than 20 years. Fred is a good-natured, heavy-set man who is 50 years old. Fred is well liked by the company managers and his co-workers because he is a hard worker who never complains about his work assignments. Recently however, Fred has been out of sorts. His crew leader is Roberta. Roberta notices that Fred is not himself. For example, she notices that Fred is constantly rubbing his wrists and his lower back. Fred com- plains about loss of sensitivity in his hands. Fred is cranky and repeatedly asks Roberta to repeat herself and to speak louder. Roberta is concerned and asks for your help. You agree to investigate. One sunny hot humid afternoon, you go out to see what Fred is doing on the site. This is what you see. Fred is working outside in the bright sunshine, adjacent to the nuclear reactor, using a heavy jack hammer to break out concrete. Fred is wearing a tank top and blue jeans. Fred is not wearing any kind of personal protective equipment (PPE). He is sweating a lot and his face, head, shoulders, arms and hands are badly sun bumed. You wave to Fred to get his attention. Fred stops using the jack- hammer and you go over to speak to him. You ask Fred about his work. He seems a lit- tle agitated. He also seems to have trouble understanding you. After repeating your question(s) several times, Fred says that he has been using the jackhammer to break out a very large area of old poured concrete. The concrete is very thick. Fred says that it is taking forever. He has been operating the jackhammer by himself every day for the last 7 weeks, sometimes for 4-5 hours each day. Your assignment is to analyse this scenario. You are to prepare a report that identifies five different hazards associated with Fred's work/task assignment. Give some thought to the source of each hazard Next, you are to assess the risk associated with each of the identified hazards and explain the basis for your risk assessment. What factors did you consider in determining the risk level? Next, you will recommend an effective con- trol measure for each of the identified hazards. Explain the basis for each of the controls that you recommend. Finally, explain how you are going to evaluate whether the con- trols that you have recommended and implemented are working effectively. That is, how will you know if the controls are protecting the worker from harm? The scoring rubric for this assignment is simple and straightforward. This assignment is worth 20 marks or 20% of your overall grade. Provided that you have properly ad- dressed the issues and questions in the preceding paragraph, you will receive 4 marks for each of the 5 hazards: Recognition or identification of hazard (1 mark) + Assessment of Risk (1 mark) Control of Hazard (1 mark) Evaluation of Recommended Control (1 mark) This is a group assignment. You can have a maximum of 4 students per group. You must use APA citations and references as appropriate. Marks will be deducted where this has not been done. Late submissions will not be accepted. Only one person should submit per group but make sure that the names and student numbers of all members of the group appear on the first page. Good luck
