Course Title : Business Management PART 1: CASE ANALYSIS (50 points) BlackBerry is widely considered to have made the first smartphone, yet Apple and then Samsung have run away with the market in recent years. BlackBerry's mobile business has seen a precipitous decline over the last few years. The latest quarterly financial reports indicate that revenue from devices like the recently launched BlackBerry Passport fell 24% to $361 million. Even worse, revenue from mobile service subscriptions fell 42%, to $368 million. Software, seen as the company's best hope for growth fell 4% to $54 million. After going through an extensive strategic review, the company appointed John S. Chen, known for fixing failing companies, to CEO post last year. Chen unveiled the latest version of its mobile device management software called BES 12 last month, which will let corporations manage their secure internal networks on BlackBerry devices as well as rival platforms like Android and iOS. BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) allows corporations to remotely manage a fleet of mobile devices and applications while providing encryption, containerization and other features to improve security. Issues such as data theft, electronic eavesdropping and the increasing prominence of the \"bring your own device\" trend have made enterprises and mobile companies place a greater emphasis on mobile security. According to Radicati Group, a market research firm, the mobile device management market is expected to more than quadruple to $5.75 billion by 2018. BlackBerry is the current leader in the MDM space, with about 14.4% market share. BlackBerry is relying on BES 12 to double its software revenues to $500 million by 2015 and has signed a series of agreements with companies, including Samsung Electronics - the world's largest smartphone manufacturer - to resell or distribute the software. In collaboration with Samsung Electronics BlackBerry will provide its mobile device management solutions to manage Samsung Galaxy smartphone and tablets. While BlackBerry gains a large addressable market and potentially deeper access to Samsung's customers, Samsung will benefit from having a more tightly integrated, endto-end mobility management and security solution, allowing it to solidify its positioning in the enterprise market. BlackBerry's shares rose 9 percent following the announcement of partnership with Samsung. BlackBerry CEO John Chen said his company will focus its rebuilding efforts on bringing new technology to its core businesslarge corporations that have always used BlackBerry devices as hip-mounted mobile offices. 1. 2.
