Project 1 NetFlix Case Study from FlatWorld

DUE:In Canvas by Monday March 8th 11:59pm.

Assignment Overview/Instructions:

This assignment consists of four (4) tasks focusing on the NetFlix case study presented in Chapter 4 of the textNetFlix in Two Acts:Sustaining Leaderhip in an Epic Shift from Atoms to Bits. This is focused on the work that we have completed with value chains, and Porter's Five Forces. Please read all instructions carefully before starting the project.

You have the option to work individually or in teams of no more than two (2) people.Note that the submission requirements are different based on if you are submitting as an individual or team.Project 3 (assigned later in the semester) will have a requirement for all submissions to be narrated. For this project, the "narrated" option is provided for individual submissions and is the only option for team submissions. Please see the section Submitting your Assignment for additional detail and explanation of what is required for the narrated submission.

Task 1 - Identify Your Research Resources (10pts)

While this is likely the last task that you complete with the project, this is provided up front for you to think about while you are working through the remainder of the assignment

Throughout the semester we will continue to examine and understand the validity of our information and data resources. This will include, how do we know the source is reliable and providing factual data? For example, how do we have confidence that the textbook itself is "telling the truth" and information quoted or data used is indeed reliable?

For this portion of the project, cite up to three (3) resources (outside the class text) you used in your research. If you only have one or two and find them reliable, that is fine.Just be sure to document them as part of this task.Include the following:

a)Document your sources.Cite the sources of your information using APA style formatting.

https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/apa_style/apa_formatting_and_style_guide/general_format.html

b)For each resource, in a couple of sentences, explain your criteria for having confidence in this resource and how you would justify its use in a scholarly paper. There is no one correct answer here nor have we covered this is detail yet in class. This is focused on getting you to staring considering how legitimate your resources are prior to using / citing them in your investigation.

Task 2 - NetFlix the Startup ~2000 (30 pts)

Read and fully understand from the class textbook, Chapter 4 - Netflix in Two Acts:Sustaining Leadership in an Epic Sift from Atoms to Bits. For the following questions, evaluate NetFlix from the view of when the company first started operating.

1.Describe the Supplier > NetFlix > Customer value chain. In a paragraph or two, describe the products and/or services NetFlix focused on in the early years. Unless it helps with your research, the Sales/Marketing and Customer Service portion of value chain are not covered or required in this assignment.

a.What products / services did the suppliers provide? Provide two (2) examples of actual suppliers and their actual services/products they supplied NetFlix.

b.What did the NetFlix core operations focus on?Using two (2) products or versions of the product/service, what is the end product or service sold to the customer and what did NetFlix operations do to provide value?

c.Who were NetFlix's original customers? Use two (2) examples to describe the general demographics of a typical NetFlix customer in terms of the purchasing habits, e.g., did a typical user rent family, action, or drama? How long did they rent the DVDs for, etc.?

2.Apply Porter's 5 forces analysis to NetFlix as a startup - With 1 to 2 sentences for each of the 5 forces segment below, characterize the competitive environment that NetFlix was in when it first launched its services in approximately the year 2000.

a)Supplier Power - Using your example supplier from above, does the supplier control or wield significant power?Explain why.

b)Buyer Power - Using an example customer from above, does the customer control or wield significant power?

c)Threat of New Entrants - How easy is it for new entrants to join the market.Provide 2 examples of what is required for a new entrant to "to get in the game"

d)Threat of Substitutes - Provide 2 examples of substitutes that people may consider as options instead of the NetFlix offering.

e)Rivalry between the competition - Who are NetFlix's competition? Can you break down the market, for example - in a graph including 4 competitors, can you document each business's market share?

Task 3 - ~2006 to 2008 - Netflix Goes Digital/Streaming (40 pts)

Move ahead in time to approximately 2008 when NetFlix is striving to be a digital content streaming service. In this exercise, you will be comparing the 2008 value chain and 5 forces model with your Task 2 Analysis from year 2000:

Describe any changes to the value chain and 5 forces:

1.Describe with an example, a change to the Supplier flow.Provide an example of a supplier that was either added or removed from the 2000 view of the supplier chain and explain why this occurred.

2.Describe with an example, a change to the Customers.Provide an example of a change to existing customer, new customer or removal of an existing customer from the 2000 value chain.(for example, new product offerings, prices, method of delivery, etc.)

3.How has the threat of new entrants changed when comparing 2000 and 2008?Provide an example of a company that entered or left the competitive space, along with an explanation of how that competitor was impacted by NetFlix's entry into this market.

4.Describe how the threat of substitutes may have changed for NetFlix, comparing 2000 with 2008.

Task 4 - NetFlix / Kaggle - Value of Data (20 pts)

As we will see in class, companies themselves or 3rd parties make data available to the public. Two major sites that are typically "open source" and provide reliable data are:

http://www.github.com

http://www.kaggle.com

In this task, you will be downloading a comma separated value (CSV) file from kaggle.com, saving as and Excel (.xlsx) file and performing basic "descriptive" statistical analysis with the data.

a)Download the CSV file, netflix_titles.csv from the following site:

https://www.kaggle.com/shivamb/netflix-shows

b)Don't forget to save the file as an xlsx / Excel format file.

c)Using the pivot table and COUNTIF/SUMIF functionality described in class, answer the following questions.Highlighting the answers in the corresponding Excel file is sufficient.

d)Using the "type" column what are the major "types" for the data in this file? What is the percentage of NetFlix titles for each type?

e)Compare the Canada and Mexico offerings.Using only the one selection where the Country = "Canada" or Country = "Mexico".For example there are entries like the following Country = "Canada, South Korea, United States" - do not include entries like these. For the Canada and Mexico sectors"

a.Compare the total volume for titles between each country.

b.Which country do you think is more receptive to titles rated TV-14 and TV-G?

c.For people that are looking for movies rated NC-17 or not rated (NR), is NetFlix a good option?

f)Create a table that describes the number of titles based solely on duration. Is there any issue you see with the data?If so - provide two (2) options you could pursue to address this issue.
