Making Tasmanian School of Business and Economics University of Tasmania Assignment Information Due: Friday 7 October2pm AEST Value: 20% Marks: 100 Overview You will define your own objective for your study using the data provided or that you collect. Your objective should be relevant to your data and have some meaning and relevance to business and related disciplines. You will select the key variable of interest and at least 3 other variables you think may be related to it, so that you may examine their relationship with the key variable. Find Partners Find other students to form groups of 2 or 3. Select Data Select to use either the: 1. Data provided on BEA674 MyLO/Content/Assessment/Assignment or 2. Collect your own data. 2.1. Find at least 20 observations on your key variable and 3+ other variables. 2.2. The data should be either for the 2.2.1. Time Series Data - same unit of analysis across time (data for Australia 1996 to 2016) 2.2.2. Cross-section Data - same time period across units of analysis (data for households in 2013) 2.2.3. Panel Data units and analysis and time both vary across observations. 2.3. Each single observation the data must be for a single unit of analysis and time (Australia 1996 or the 291st household for 2013) 3. Identify your key variable of interest, that you are mainly interested in. It will be easiest if your key variable is a continuous or discrete numerical variable rather than a qualitative variable. 4. Select at least three variables: at least one of which must be numerical and one must be categorical. Those using time series data, may create a dummy variable (0 and 1) equal to 1, for times that a certain event is occurring (eg. winter, recession, GFC). University of Tasmania - CRICOS PROVIDER CODE 00586B 1 BEA 674 Data and Business Decision Making, S2, 2016 - Assignment Note that you can combine each assessment criteria listed against the left margin of the page and do not have to address each one with a separate sentence. A. Write your introduction ( to page) 20 marks A1. A2. A3. A4. A5. A6. Clearly state the objective for your study in 1-2 sentence(s). Provide the details for who/what when your analysis of this question will cover in a single sentence. Explain why the study is of interest in 1-3 sentences. Provide the source, in brief of the data you will use in a single sentence. Provide details on what is your key variable and explanatory variables will you use, in 13 sentences. Explain why you choose those independent variables and the potential relationship of your x variables upon your y variable using any relevant theories, statements, beliefs or previous work in the literature in 2-4 sentences. B. Summarise and Chart Your Data 20 marks B1. B2. B3. B4. B5. B6. B7. Time Series: Provide the frequency you will use and any methods used to alter the frequency of your data Cross-sectional: Provide the unit of analysis, that is, what does each observation represent Provide the sample range and number of observations Provide the full source of each of your variables. If you are using data from BEA674 MyLO then the source for your data and all variables is BEA674 MyLO. Provide the measures of each of your variables. a. units of measurement (eg. $, $m, % ) b. Time Series: original, seasonally adjusted, trend/smoothed, nominal or real (if so how and what price series was used) levels, change or growth? Frequency of change or growth (eg. annual or daily?) c. Cross-sectional: did you transform or change any of the original data. Explain why you selected or changed the above measures of your variables. For your y and each of your numerical x variables provide summary statistics a. five-number summary (min, Q1, median, Q3, max) b. sample mean, standard error of the sample mean and sample standard deviation For categorical variables show the frequency distribution either a table or chart. Interpret and comment on B6, B7, C1 and C2 highlighting any thing that is relevant to your study. University of Tasmania - CRICOS PROVIDER CODE 00586B 2 BEA 674 Data and Business Decision Making, S2, 2016 - Assignment C Examine the Relationships on Your Key Variable of Your other Variables 30 marks C1. Provide charts and tables that show the relationship using techniques from BEA674 C2. For time series data provide time-series charts of your y and x variables over the sample range. for cross-sectional data provide charts or tables that show the value of your y and x variables by groups based upon one for your qualitative x variables (or values of a quantitative variable if you have no qualitative variables) C3. Interpret and comment on the above highlighting any signs that there is a relationship between your Y and X variables and the possible nature of that relationship (linear or otherwise) D Propose and Test Hypothesis (to page) 10 marks D1. Propose and test hypothesis relevant to your study. D2. Conduct and interpret E Write Conclusion (to page) 10 marks E1. Discuss your results, and make recommendations for appropriate business/policy decision making. Note that this section should not be used to simply repeat discussion on results. E2. You should also comment on 'bigger' issues related to the data provided and make suggestions for consideration of other variables and analyses which would be valuable in future research and business/policy decision making. Support your suggestions with relevant references where possible.
