Organizations like the Nurses union help to negotiate better working conditions as well as advocate for things such as better hours, increased pay and other positive changes in the workplace (NJS, 2023). Organized labor has both pros and cons. Some pros would be that they help to ensure a safe working environment, advocate for better pay, ensure due process for discipline, provide consistent standards for things such as hiring, promotions and terminations. They also investigate grievances. Some cons are that there are union fees, unpaid strikes, not everyone supports collective action, seniority is more rewarded than performance. In experiencing healthcare unions personally and reading about them as well I support it. I believe there is strength in numbers. I feel that when you weigh out the good and bad the good far out ways the bad. Unions tend to protect the rights through collective action and negotiations (NJS, 2023).
