The current day and age is progressive, therefore the need to adhere to traditional and rigid work structure is not as necessary or helpful as it was before. Now, there are various different types of work structures, or ways of getting the same job done, that may benefit the individual more than in days past. One work style is temporary work. An example of temporary work would be hiring extra postal drivers during the holiday season with a termination date being in January after the holiday season. Some benefits of this style would be potentially getting priority when the company opens up new full time/ permanent positions because oftentimes company's will look in their temp workers before hiring outside of the organization (Reardon et al., 2022). A downside of this work style is that it is not permanent and that there is no guarantee that permanent jobs will be opened up so the worker may need to look for a new job faster than they think.
Another work style is job sharing. Job sharing is when two employees share or split the responsibilities of a full time job, meaning that both employees work part time hours (Brocklebank & Whitehouse, 2003). This requires a lot of communication and effort and it is not for everyone (Brocklebank & Whitehouse, 2003). The potential benefits of this work style is increased work life balance, less workload, and job satisfaction due to working within a team (Brocklebank & Whitehouse, 2003). The downsides of this is that it may be difficult for some people to delegate or pass off tasks, or work as a team (Brocklebank & Whitehouse, 2003).
Telecommuting is when people can work anywhere with internet and therefore can work remotely or from home. This is beneficial for those that may need to work from home due to childcare or other family responsibilities (Reardon et al., 2022). The downside of this work style is that for some people it may cause boundary blurring in their work-home balance and thus create more distress. Telecommuting and homeworking are very similar in that aspect.
