The idea of making a career out of what you love has been around for quite awhile, but people actually living by this mantra is relatively new. Only in recent history have we had the freedom to choose and create careers that we might be passionate about. DePalma (2021) calls this the "new economy" and suggests that work passion, as well as adherence to work passion, is a major priority for white collar workers in the new economy. The participants in this study described work passion as being in line with four central tenets: attraction, enjoyment, motivation, and perseverance (DePalma, 2021). This can lead to great success and satisfaction with one's career, but leaning too far into one characteristic of work passion (say, perseverance for example) could cause burnout or even lead to organizations exploiting workers (DePalma, 2021). Just like passion within romantic relationships, it is a double edged sword, but it is not detrimental enough to warrant ignoring.
I feel as though pursuing what you love is very important. I feel like this class and the readings are a little ambiguous about the stance on this, but I feel like personal happiness and fulfillment is far more important than a successful career. Usually pursuing what you love can lead to a successful career, or they go hand in hand. I have not always followed this mantra in the past as I am currently in the military and this choice was not due to passion. I am pursuing what I love now though and that is psychology. I feel strongly aligned with the aforementioned four central tenets of work passion when I imagine myself pursuing higher education in the psychological field and I am very motivated and excited to do so. I just hope that it will not lead me to burnout as I am prone to overdoing myself.
