The key to confidentiality is a respected part one's code of ethics. This is to ensure that the people feel comfortable talking about private and revealing information in a private room. In other situations, maintaining confidentiality might not be appropriate. In the article below, it explains why some of confidentiality is broken being a school psychologist. Confidential information is revealed only with appropriate informed consent, except in those situations in which failure to release information would result in clear danger to the child or others (Rae, 2009). Respondents generally found it ethical to break confidentiality when risky adolescent behaviors became more dangerous or potentially harmful, although there was considerable variability between respondents (Rae, 2009). Adolescents have always engaged in risk-taking behaviors as a way of testing the limits of their independent decisions which is a natural developmental task of becoming an adult (Rae, 2009). Research suggests that school psychologists must sometimes face the difficult decision of whether to break confidentiality to protect the student and others from harm, and these ethical dilemmas become all the more salient when working with risk-taking adolescents (Rae, 2009).
Factors that need to be considered for breaking confidentiality is ensuring the reason behind breaking the confidentiality is going to cause harm to the client and/or others. This also includes threats and other inappropriate behaviors that are said during a session that can be dangerous to the client and/or others. What might be some unintended consequences for breaking confidentiality between the patient/psychologist relationship is the trust that was built in the client to confide with the psychologist will no longer be there and possibly the client remove themselves from receiving services from that psychologist or to receivetherapy.
