Create an agreeable or disagreeable response to the following post. Discuss key details.

This week's additional TedTalk YouTube video on "The Power of Emotional Intelligence", Dr. Travis Bradberry describes Emotional intelligence (EI) as distinct from IQ and is a choice not an innate quality. As humans are emotional creatures, the way we handle our day-to-day both professionally and personally requires actions and reactions to our emotions. EI provides the ability to not only understand our emotions better, but also to master these emotions as being primarily a critical skill. Emotional intelligence is the foundation of this critical skill and it can help us work with each other better or in some cases there are individuals that might use it for personal gain and manipulation. There is much debate in the use of EI in the workplace and from my experience it has become a commonplace for organizations to include questions related to EI in interviews during the hiring selection process. The inclusion of EI related questions helps employers measure an applicant's level of EI to learn more about how they cope during difficult situations on the job or handle challenging situations with co-workers or management.

According to Furnham (2008) researchers debate and question the value of the construct in EI and its uses with a major issue due to how emotional experiences can be subjective thus lacking objectivity in how it can be used as a form of measurement. Learning how we handle and cope with our emotions is important as it can help develop better EI through areas of personal competence and social competence (Furnham, 2008). Our cognitive ability builds critical skills within EI such as self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation within ourselves and in the how we manage relationships through building empathy and better social skills (Furnham, 2008).

In researching the relationship between emotional intelligence and uncivil workplace behavior among managers, findings suggest higher levels of negative affect linked with engaging in uncivil behavior and greater EI associated with more positive affect with less negative affect, and a lower likelihood of individuals involved in uncivil behavior (Loi et al., 2021). Further to this, research demonstrated the importance of EI and the affects it can have in the workplace so that management and stakeholders can better examine these affects and contributing factors involved (Loi et al., 2021).

To conclude, I believe EI is distinct from personality and according to Dr. Bradberry YouTube (2017) informs personality is a stable set of preferences and tendencies. I also concur how EI is a critical skill that can be learned or developed although how it is used or measured can be subjective.
