Curt Varone suggests, in his 2017 article titled, "Fire Law: Disciplinary Challenges in the Fire Service" that the fire service has historically struggled with discipline. He says that, even though firefighters support each other, we must also discipline our personnel. The very concept of discipline in brotherhood and sisterhood is a dilemma. Is the outcome of discipline in most cases is predetermined before the investigation is completed? Do we have each other's backs? Why, or why not?
