Dahlia takes her daughter, Preeti, to a funfair owned and operated by Kris. Preeti wants a ride on the big dipper, so Dahlia, who does not like high speed, leaves her in the queue and goes for a ride on the big wheel which is about 50 metres away. While Dahlia is watching from the big wheel, the carriage in which Preeti is riding flies off the rails of the big dipper, due to a loose bolt in the framework, and plummets 20 metres to the ground. Preeti is badly injured, and Dahlia is, at first, hysterical, and later suffers from catastrophic neurosis. Sufi, who is also on the big wheel at the time of the accident, is so shocked at what he sees that he later suffers from feelings of anxiety and is unable to work for 15 months. Preeti's father, Ron, sees pictures of the accident on the television news that evening, and is so shocked that he suffers a mental disorder.
