Dakota is a 16-year-old student at Whitmore Lake High School who plays on the varsity volleyball team. On May 24, 2000, she and all of the other student-athletes were in the school gym for mandatory study hall after school, before the sports' practices start. Another female student reported to the gym teacher Brian Carpenter, who was supervising study hall, that she had seen students smoking marijuana in the bathroom that afternoon before study hall, but that she wouldn't identify the students. Carpenter ordered the students to remain in the gym and he went to find the Principal. The Principal, Ms. Orange, ordered Carpenter to search all the student-athletes and asked several teachers to assist. When student-athletes objected to the search, Carpenter told them to "shut up" and explained that the student-athletes had no choice but to participate in the strip searches. One male teacher required the male student-athletes to drop their underwear to their ankles one at a time in the shower room. Carpenter, meanwhile, searched lockers, clothing, and other areas of the gymnasium. Ms. Orange took the female student-athletes into the girls' locker room where the girls pulled up their skirts and pulled down their pants while standing in a circle. No marijuana was found on any of the student-athletes or in their gym lockers. No other students at the school were searched. Dakota and her parents were really angry that she was strip searched.
