Dark Side of Leadership A Leader is a person with a vision who leads a group, an organization, or a society as a whole. Leadership

Dark Side of Leadership A Leader is a person with a vision who leads a group, an organization, or a society as a whole. Leadership is a quality to influence a person or group of people to achieve a common goal. Powerful, strong people came to our mind when we heard the word leadership like Abraham Lincoln, Winston Churchill, Martin Luther King Jr, etc. as the example of good leadership. Leadership is not always good there can also be a dark side to leadership. The negative characteristics of leadership conduct that can hurt individuals, organizations, and society are referred to as the dark side of leadership. It was explained as negative effects of "dark side" leader traits: Narcissism, hubris, dominance, and Machiavellianism. (Timothy A. Judge, 2009). Abuse of power is one of the common traits of the dark side of leadership. Leaders who abuse their authority frequently utilize their position to dominate and bully their subordinates. Leaders who abuse their position may engage in sexual harassment, physical abuse, or other forms of wrongdoing in extreme circumstances. Dominating the subordinate by the head is another aspect of dark leadership. In 2019, officials from a French telecommunications business were found guilty of "moral harassment" after engaging in what one employee described as "management by terror." According to NPR, employees faced "demotions, demeaning work, micromanagement, repeated reassignments, or outright isolation." According to reports, 19 employees committed suicide as a result of this abuse. (Fouts, 2020) The Dalai Lama, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, is the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism and is regarded as a global symbol of peace and compassion. He apologized after a video of his interaction with the boy went viral on social media, sparking international outrage, including charges of child abuse can be taken as an example of the dark side of leadership. Narcissism and Hubris are other traits of the bad side of leadership. Adolf Hitler is often cited as a narcissistic leader because of his extreme self-importance, arrogance, and lack of empathy for others. Hitler was described as a leader who use power for personal gain while disregarding the welfare of others. (David M. & Roderick M., 2005). Machiavellianism is also another trait of the dark side of leadership. They manipulate others and deceive others for their benefit. (Kiazad, Restubog , Zagenczyk, Christian, & Tang , 2010) the research investigates the connection between Machiavellianism, authoritarian leadership, and abusive supervisory behavior. According to the study, supervisors who scored higher on Machiavellianism assessments were more likely to engage in abusive behavior toward their subordinates. Furthermore, when supervisors demonstrated authoritarian leadership traits, the association between Machiavellianism and abusive behavior was stronger. Many leaders have negative implications, such as poisonous work conditions and unethical behavior. The leader traits were categorized into five types: task-oriented, people-oriented, self-oriented, dark-side, and context-specific traits. (Timothy A. Judge, 2009). The implications of a leader's dark side can be severe, both for the leader and for their followers. Abuse of power, for example, has been associated with lower job satisfaction, higher turnover intentions, and lower employee engagement. (Bennett J., 2007) Toxic leadership constantly humiliates employees of the organization with their egoist behaviors and authoritarian attitudes; It is a dysfunctional form of leadership that discourages and destroys them physically and mentally. Toxic leadership increases staff turnover, decreases productivity, creates disagreements across departments, and reduces employees' organizational commitment. As a result, understanding the nature, dynamics, and growth of toxic leadership and organizations is critical. Because toxic leadership behaviors in organizations impair intrinsic motivation and job satisfaction, toxicity should be eliminated in the organization before these scenarios emerge. It is said that toxic leadership kills group unity. (Coban c., 2022). Thus, we can see the common traits in the person with the dark side of leadership. Abuse of power, Narcissism, Hubris, and Machiavellianism are some of the traits that can be found in dark leadership. These actions can harm an organization's reputation. Individuals must be motivated and pleased in order to avoid toxic behaviors. The ability and prevention of this typical leadership style in organizations are critical for both the employee and the organization. It is frequently necessary to analyze leader behavior in the context in order to properly deal with toxic leaders and understand their behavior. Recognizing the dark side of leadership is important to ensuring that leaders behave in the best interests of the organization. There must be strong laws, regulations, and guidelines in place to hold people accountable for their activities. Organizations can foster ethical and responsible leadership by tackling the dark side of leadership.
