The problem set data file has an id variable and five items that are indicators of a subscale called 'shared emotional connection.' Below are the five items

Shared Emotional Connection:

• In general, how well do rehab members get along
• In general, how warm do rehab members feel toward each other
• In general, how friendly do rehab members feel toward each other
• In general, how thoughtful are rehab members toward each other
• In general, how much of a sense of camaraderie do rehab members feel with each other

Responses were based on a 5-point Likert scale

• 1: None / Not at all
• 2: A little
• 3: Some
• 4: A fair amount
• 5: A great deal
• 99999: I choose not to respond

Missing values are indicated by the response '99999' - but have not yet been declared.

Question 1 (3 points)

Generate a new set of item names for the five items.

Question 2 (3 points)

Would any items need to be reverse scored? Justify your answer.

Question 3 (10 points)

Use a missing values statement to identify the response of '99999' as missing.

Question 4 (16 points)

Based on your item names, write the following SPSS syntax.

• Using an SPSS compute statement, generate a new variable named "t1sec" that is the mean of the five items.
• In the syntax, use the 'mean.4' convention.

Question 5 (5 points)

Use a frequencies procedure to generate minimum, maximum, and mean values for t1sec. Based on the output and what you know about the response scale, what can you say about clients' reports of shared emotional connection with others in the treatment center? One or two sentences should be sufficient.
