De Beers, once the diamond monopolist, have lost some of its control in the diamond industry. Mines in Australia and Russia became independent. Diamonds were found in Canada and Botswana. Diamond producers are selling to others including De Beers. To deal with the new conditions, De Beers stopped the policy of buying and stockpiling diamonds in an effort to control the world diamond supply. Will this strategy enable it to remain a monopolist?
