The Role of Leaders in Developing Trust among Members to Maintain Work Engagement Developing Trust

Earning trust and engaging teams depend on a multifaceted approach founded on empathy, communication, authenticity, and actions that demonstrate mutual respect and value for each team member. According to Asad et al. (2022), behavioral consistency and authenticity of interactions help develop trust among leaders and team members. The author suggests that leaders need to lead by example and demonstrate integrity, transparency, and accountability in their actions and decisions. For instance, when a team needs to a task within a strict deadline, leaders may actively participate in the process showing dedication towards task accomplishment to achieve broader goals, rather than simply supervising.

Engaging People When They are Tired, Disbelieving and Uninterested

When team members are tired, disbelieving, and uninterested, effective communication and active and empathic listening can be applied to enhance their engagement. Firstly, the emotions and concerns of team members should be acknowledged to develop an accepting environment for open communication. As per Bhimani et al. (2023), disengagement can also result from a lack of understanding of the goals and expectations. Therefore, members will be explained the importance of their contribution to achieving the broader objectives of the organization. Thirdly, members will be encouraged to take breaks, self-care, and seek emotional support in a supportive environment to enable them to return to work with greater focus and engagement.

Personal Experience

Leaders who emphasize trust-building, goal alignment, and reward trusting behavior are observed to effectively engage and motivate members (Engeb et al., 2022). In most instances, I have experienced greater engagement at work where leaders demonstrated genuine care for members' well-being and growth. It encompasses, recognizing efforts, fostering a collaborative and helpful environment where every member emphasizes information exchange, and providing mentorship to overcome challenges faced at the workplace.
