"The RDA is a tax law that allows a purchaser to depreciate (or, more accurately, to amortize) almost the entire purchase price of a sports franchise". The problem for many lawmakers was figuring out how to properly tax sport franchises. The usual tangible and intangible assets will depreciate over time to a point where they are almost worth nothing. But with sport franchises, the value of them continue to increase. The RDA is very unique and specific for sport franchises, so great accountants and lawyers may find a way to manipulate the tax system to their advantage. This gets many of the franchise owners to heavily minimize tax liabilities. Now if we look at this from an ethical or unethical standpoint, I believe that it is debatable. I can see how many people would say this is ethical, and they are just playing the system to their advantage. That is fair to say, because they are not doing anything wrong.The issue I have with it is that tax should be a social responsibility to everyone. Even more so when you and your business is making so much money. Everyone should do their part regardless of your financial situation. That is fair and ethical for everyone. An article that speaks on the unethical practices of tax avoidance states "Companies should be providing the funds for public services such as healthcare, education and infrastructure. These are public services which companies benefit from either directly or indirectly. Tax avoidance has been branded by some as an immoral and unethical practice that undermines the very integrity of the tax system" (Foster 2013). This situation does not really surprise me, because people will always try to find a way to manipulate the system. It is not against the law, but their actions do affect millions of people in the long run.
