Describe someone you know who does inadequate referencing. You must give a specific example of inadequate referencing to earn credit. Your example must come from an actual interaction. The example must come from a spoken language conversation (vs. text or email). The conversation must be a conversation you have with one other individual, not a conversation in a group. The utterance with the referent must be directed to you alone.  State what the inadequate referent is. You must describe the background of the conversation and who is talking.

A post about inadequate referencing is a post about a speaker who codes referents as identifiable, for example, with a pronoun or definite lexical noun, even though the listener (you) is unable to identify the referent of the pronoun or definite lexical noun. Include a specific example in which the speaker does inadequate referencing in order to make your point clear.

Inadequate referencing differs from ambiguous referencing* in that with inadequate referencing, the listener does not have any identifiable, previously mentioned referents to choose from or a set of implied referents to choose from and the referencing fails. The speaker may code the referent as a pronoun and not as an indefinite lexical noun. The speaker may code the referent as a definite lexical noun and not as an indefinite lexical noun.

Do not add what you think someone should have said.  Just explain why the referent is not adequate.

Do not give examples of referents coded by a proper noun or 2^nd person pronouns (you).

Do not give examples of referencing which refers to something in the environment. Demonstrative pronouns (this, that, these, those) may be used to refer to something in the environment as may other pronouns accompanied by gesture, for example pointing or eye gaze. References which depend on the speaker seeing something in the environment or on a phone, etc, which you do not see, are environmental references. Referencing which depends on an environmental reference is excluded.

Do not give examples from children under the age of 12 years old. I want you to post problematic pragmatic behaviors, not developmental behaviors. If you give an example from a child 12 or over, you must state the age of the child.

Do not give examples from children or adults with language disorders that would account for the problematic pragmatic behaviors or with diagnoses that would account for the problematic pragmatic problems, for example, a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder or developmental language disorder.
