Design Scenario The city of Youngville, Florida owns and operates its own power utility. The power utility has built a fiber-optic network that monitors power meters at residents and business buildings. The network is called the Youngville Fiber Network (YFN). Since the YFN has more capability than to just monitor electrical meters, the city has expanded the services to offer the following;
Business Internet connectivity
Resident Internet connectivity
Resident TV services
City government services use YFN for connectivity such as 911, fire department and interoffice connectivity. For residential TV services, a hybrid fiber-optic/coax cable is used. In each neighborhood YFN is converted to the hybrid cable to supply TV services. The YFN backbone consists of a logical ring fiber-optic 10 Gigabit Ethernet network. This ring runs through the city and provides redundancy so that a single failed connection does not bring the entire network down. There are 4 core routers on the backbone, 3 of which provide Internet connectivity. All YFN routers route Internet traffic to one of three Internet core routers. All other services extend off this backbone. For businesses downtown YFN has strategically placed distribution nodes (Layer 3 switch) that connect to all subscribed businesses within 2 city blocks (or within Ethernets copper attenuation distance). For subscribed businesses outside of downtown, fiber is run to a switch installed in the business and UTP is used for connectivity to nodes. Each neighborhood has a hybrid fiber-coaxial distribution node to supply Internet and TV services to residents via coax.
