1. Purpose and Requirements The first step is to understand the purpose of the system you are designing and its key requirements. You are designing your custom leadership system for a private financial planning firm. According to NIST (2011), "The term "leadership system" refers to how leadership is exercised, formally and informally, throughout the organization; it is the basis for and the way key decisions are made, communicated, and carried out. It includes structures and mechanisms for decision-making; two-way communication; selection and development of leaders and managers; and reinforcement of values, ethical behavior, directions, and performance expectations."

2. Nature of the System Understand the nature of the activities being designed and how they influence the amount and type of structure appropriate for the system design. According to Latham (2012) there are four natures to consider, including physical, knowledge and information, creative, and bespoke (custom). However, the physical nature is not applicable to a leadership system. Your task is to address the three natures that are applicable including the knowledge and information, creative, and bespoke (custom). 

 

3. Theories and Concepts - Identify and describe the key theories and concepts that inform the design of your custom Leadership System. Include the key concepts and theories from your leadership course(s). There are quite a few leadership theories to choose from (servant leadership, transformation leadership, etc.) so pick one or two (no more than three) leadership theories that fit your leadership style. Describe how the theories will inform the design of your leadership system. 

 

4. Inspiring Examples - You must use two Baldrige examples one from the K&N Case and the example from your Team Project Case study. The task here is NOT about inspiring leaders. The task here is to study LEADERSHIP SYSTEMS from other organizations and use what you learned to inspire your own design. For each example (K&N and Your Team Project Example) identify the key characteristics of those leadership systems that you will creatively adapt to your own design and describe how they will influence the design of your leadership system. 

 

5. Unique Context - Describe the current organizational context that is relevant to the activities being designed. The task here is to identify the key factors from your situation that influence the design of your leadership system. For example, leading a virtual team of 10 people spread around the world is a different leadership task than leading a manufacturing plant with 200 employees in one location. As you identify the key factors discuss how those influence your leadership. 

 

6. Design Principles - Consider the eight design principles described in the [Re]Create text Chapter 6 pages 167-170 when developing your own custom leadership system.

 

7. System Integration - Identify and analyze the connections between the Leadership System and other systems in the organization. The task here is to identify the inputs and outputs (connections) to and from the leadership system. For example, the leadership system often connects to the employee performance review system, the strategic planning system, the performance measurement system, etc. 

 

8. Design - Design your own custom leadership system using what you have learned in the previous four sections and the three additional dimensions provided here in the instructions (purpose and requirements, nature of the system, and design principles). Include a diagram of your system and describe how the components work as a system. 

 

 References - Support your discussions and critical analysis with solid management literature and research references. Include a list of your references formatted according to APA guidelines. Include all references that you cite in the paper and include ONLY those references cited in the paper. At a minimum, make sure that you use (cite in the body of the paper and include in the reference list) the required references for this assignment
