Despite the fact that he has been with his company for over two years, a young man had twice been passed over for promotion in favor of one of his peers. With his student loans coming due, the man felt pressure to increase his income. He figured that if he could make his peer look bad by causing his peer to call in sick more often, that the next promotion was sure to be his.

After doing some research, the man purchased a culture of mold spores that could be released into the air over time. The mold spores were typically used to make cheese but it was known that the spores can also cause a severe allergic reaction in many people. The reaction can lead to respiratory distress and death. The man placed a packet of mold spores in the desk of his rival. Unbeknownst to the man, however, his rival had been having an affair with the boss's wife. When the mold spores leaked into the air, the man was in his office with the boss's wife. Upon exposure to the spores, the boss's wife experienced a severe allergic reaction and was taken to the hospital. She later died as a result of complications from an adverse reaction between her allergy medication and exposure to the mold spores. The man was charged with murder of the boss's wife.

Of what crime, if any, is the man likely to be convicted?

Group of answer choices

Murder, because the man's reckless act resulted in the death of another.

Involuntary manslaughter, because the man's conduct was grossly negligent.

Voluntary manslaughter, because the man intended to harm his peer.

No crime, because the man did not intend for either the peer or the boss's wife to die.
