Hello everyone,

Social cognitive theory from what I understand is our experiences and how they validate how we interact with the world as well as our environment.

I love the example the man used in the "What are schemas" video with the dogs. I was absolutely terrified of dogs for most of my life because my cousin's dog bit my ankle once and chased me down the street. So whenever I saw a dog I would jump and run. Even the sound of a bark would set me off. Then my grandma bought a puppy and after I got used to having him around I never looked at dogs the same. My first instinct is "oh look at the dog" My schema had to change in order for that shift to happen. Another example is how me and my mother view human nature, decency, and kindness. My mother is disabled and has a hard time walking. On our way to the chiropractor a young boy notices how she struggled walking and was holding onto me and he held open the door for us. We both thanked him and went into the building. My mom had to have talked about that boy and how he held open a door for us for 5 minutes. I got tired of hearing from it because it wasn't a big deal. He held open a door for a disabled woman and we thanked him. My mom went on the explain how I should've gave the boy money to buy snacks for his good deed and how that boy was going to possibly be the president one day. I got tired of the conversation and no longer entertained it and my mother said "You are so negative. You never want to give people credit." My mom has an overall negative view on humanity and believes people are inherently bad and are more likely to do nothing or do wrong. I however am not used to people repeatedly disrespecting me and displaying terrible behavior. When I do come in contact we such people I think of them as odd and their behavior is unusual. For my mother that behavior is the kind she is used to so when people display what is to me "basic human decency" my mom thinks that person is a saint. My behavior affects my schema because the act of someone simply opening a door is worthy of thanks. Nothing else. The alternative is someone who doesn't open a door, which is fine, and rude behavior would be to open a door for themselves and slam it behind them in my face.

If I ever found out the way I think is wrong and it would hard to adapt because my schema would have to change again. I would have to learn to expect what I believe is negative behavior as normal first.

Reciprocal determinism suggests that our behavior is caused by experience and our environment equally and our behavior can change with a change of scenery.

As someone who has lived in multiple states and in rural as well as urban areas two sides of the same town will see a different side of me depending on the culture and how safe it feels. That is what I expect happens to most people
