Opioid prescribing changes

The use of opioids for post-operative pain relief should be discontinued and a pain scale approach should be used with anti-inflammatory drugs used as the first line of pain relief.

Implementation procedures include changes to the current Post-operative pain relief protocol to remove Oxycodone from the current pain medication protocol and modify existing tiered database selection to promote the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

Training and adoption practices will need to be covered with patient care providers and prescribers (nurses, anesthesiologists, surgeons, medical assistants, physicians' assistants, and nurse practitioners).
