Determine the PCI index of a local street assuming the following:
- Asphalt pavement
- The street block is one mile long and 26 ft wide
- The # of units to be tested is based on a curve that represents a standard deviation of 10
- Assume size of each unit is 3000 sf (may be varied based ASTM D6433)
- For the purpose of this exercise, perform your analysis on only half the units that you determined need to be inspected
- 40 ~ 1x5 ft Alligator cracks were observed. They are equal in severity proportion (ex if 3 cracks are classified as low, then 3 are medium & 3 are high) evenly distributed
- Transverse cracks were detected full width of the road every 500 ft. 1 longitudinal crack detected full length of the block
- 10 Potholes were detected & were evenly spaced
- 4 ~ 1x10 ft rutting were observed at the each end of the street block
Criteria:
- Draw a layout of the roadway
- Draw/show the distresses noted above
- Show your no. of units
- Show the units to be tested
- Show the ones you performed the analysis on as noted in item 5 above
- Provide the analysis
- Determine the PCI
- Provide your conclusion
Hint: Use the forms, charts/ASTM D 6433
