Positions that My Side and the Other side might slip into and comments about those positions (1-2 pages). 3. Negotiation Stages: Analysis. Describe important information, how that information needs to be organized, hostile emotions that may present themselves (to My Side and the Other Side), People problems that may present themselves, and relationships that are entangled around this negotiation. Discuss options already on the table at this point in the negotiations and any additional information about any criteria for agreement. (2 pages). 4. Negotiation Stages: Planning. Describe ideas that you can generate about the negotiation, initial considerations, people problems and people considerations; what the priorities should be (top priorities, force ranked interests, etc.), and additional options; the negotiation context (what went on in the past? What other negotiations are occurring at the same time? What will happen in the near future?), previous negotiations between My Side and the Other Side, and what is precipitating this round of negotiations; additional considerations; other aspects of the negotiation that may need to be investigated away from the table (2 pages). 5. Negotiation stages: Discussion. What are the communication strategies of My Side? What are possible differences in perception? What are My Side’s hot spots (frustration, anger, must haves); what are the Other Side’s hot spots? Any known and/or possible communication difficulties; any special communication issues, such as language, cultural, technology, location? International considerations (negotiation style of My Side and the Other Side’s culture? Use of a translator? Word choice? Use of External Media (entering and leaving the building; prepared statements; press releases, negotiating in the press? (At least 2 pages). 6. Negotiation Stages: Implementation. What are the implementation issues? Timing (first quarter, first year of a four-year contract is VERY different from fourth quarter, fourth year), costs (who pays, how much, what are the limits), re-open clause? Methods for matching expectations (engineering specifications? Pictures, word choice); letters of understanding required? (At least 2 pages). 7. Negotiation Method: Separate the People from the Problem. What are the specific people problems that need to be separated from this negotiation? How can these people issues be resolved? What are deeply held values on My Side? The Other Side? Any issues related to “saving face” on My Side or the Other side? What is producing the emotions? What are some ways to involve the Other Side early in the solutions?
