Relative to the total society, discuss the extent to which you believe our society regards this behavior as deviant. Relative to this deviant act, describe both the internal and external means of control that are relied upon to prevent the behavior. Example

A deviant behavior many people do is drive under the influence of alcohol. Our society deems this behavior as negative because of the impact it can have on ourselves and other members of our society. It is not uncommon to hear that people die as a result of a drunk driver yet, members of our society are not willing to take measures to keep themselves and everyone safe. The external forces that try to help people deviate from drinking and driving are policemen and the department of transportation. Depending on the state and severity, if caught driving under the influence of alcohol the consequences can impact one's judicial life record, they can be cited and have their license suspended. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism states that, "Alcohol interferes with the brain's communication pathways, and can affect the way the brain looks and works. These disruptions can change mood and behavior, and make it harder to think clearly and move with coordination (Links to an external site.)". Although internally we know this, some people disregard this fact and proceed to doing it. In 2020, 11,654 people died due to drunk driving. (NCSA). The sad part is that this is a preventable death that does not need to happen if everyone was responsible behind the wheel.

I think that in some instances peer pressure has a way of controlling our behavior. I have been at parties where a person will ask someone we know is driving if they want a drink. The driver responds and says, "No, thank you I am driving." to which I have heard, "Ohh come on it is only one drink". The one drink turns into 5 drinks. It is in situations like this that we as a society need to look out for one another. We need to stop condoning this type of peer pressure. It is ok to say, "No". We have to learn to respect people's choices and not push people into unhealthy behaviors. I think that if we see someone drunk, why not offer a ride and help them get home instead of letting them go. Or if as a driver we know we are going to drink, why not get an uber/lyft or catch a ride with a designated driver. The external controls are set in place as checkpoints, transportation and patrolling but we have to do our individual part to help the public stay safe.
