Devout Sikhs are required to wear a kirpan, a ceremonial dagger, wherever they go. Recently, a Sikh boy was suspended from a public school in the State of Ames, under a school policy that prohibits the carrying of knives to school. The policy specifically prohibits the carrying of items that are or can be used as weapons and covers guns, explosive devices, pellet guns, as well as knives, and other items with sharp blades. The school has a "zero tolerance" policy for the carrying of weapons; violation of this school policy carries a mandatory ten-day suspension.
