In the back of the CRC, there is a sports area with a track and field. The area has been selected as the location to hold a citywide track meet. In preparation for this event, the manager of the CRC wants to install new fencing around the track.

The track is an equal quadrant track, which means that it is 400 meters around with 100m along each curve and 100 meters along each straightaway. This layout will accommodate a field approximately 150 feet by 320 feet inside the track.

1. Estimate the perimeter of the track in feet.

2. A rectangular fence will be placed around track. The fence needs to be positioned at least 10 feet away from the edge of track. Determine how much fencing (in feet) would be needed to enclose the track.

Field Events

The field in the middle of the track will be used for four events; the long jump, shot put, discus throws, and the high jump. As part of the agreement to host the track meet, the CRC manager must submit a drawing that details where each of the field events will be located in the area of the field.

Long Jump

• The runway should be at least 48 inches wide and 130 feet long to the edge of the takeoff board.

• The width of the takeoff board is a minimum of 12 inches and 48 inches long.

• The landing pit is a minimum of 9 feet wide and 15 feet long.

• The takeoff board should be approximately 8 feet from the landing pit.

Shot Put and Discus Throws
You will need two separate areas for the shot put and discus events. The throwing circles for the shot put and discus are approximately 8 feet in diameter. The shot or discus must land within a 35-degree arc.

• The length of the shot put boundary lines should be at least 75 feet.

• The length of the discus boundary lines should be at least 100 feet.

The high jump runway fan is a semi-circle with radius of at least 50 feet.
