Diet and lifestyle influence colorectal cancer recurrence. The role of dietary supplement use in colorectal cancer recurrence remains controversial. In this study, we examined the association between dietary supplement use and colorectal cancer recurrence. Colorectal cancer cases were recruited between 1995 and 2002 and followed until 2008. Cancers with with a diameter of 1 cm and/or (tubulo)villous histology and/or with high grade dysplasia and/or 3 adenomas detected at the same colonic examination were considered as recurrent cancers. Results were adjusted for age, sex, educational level and number of colonoscopies during follow-up.
The following 2x2 tables are hypothetical results based on the scenario above. Use these tables to answer the next set of questions. For the purposes of this assignment, consider dietary supplement use as exposed and non-use of the supplement as unexposed.
Females (Stratum 1)
|
| Colorectal Cancer Recurrence | No Recurrence |
Supplement Use | Yes | 160 | 240 |
No | 40 | 360 |
Males (Stratum 2)
|
| Colorectal Cancer Recurrence | No Recurrence |
Supplement Use | Yes | 40 | 560 |
No | 10 | 590 |
- (4 points) Calculate the risk ratio and 95% confidence intervals for colorectal cancer recurrence among those who used the dietary supplement compared to those who did not use the dietary supplement for males and females separately. Round your answers to the nearest tenth and present them in interval notation, like this RR= X.X (X.X, X.X).
- (2 points) Are the RRs that you calculated in the previous problem, statistically significant? How did you determine this?
- (3 points) Calculate the crude RR and 95% confidence interval for colorectal cancer recurrence among those who used the dietary supplement compared to those who did not use the dietary supplement. Round your answer to the nearest tenth and present them in interval notation, like this RR= X.X (X.X, X.X).Hint: you will need to combine the 2x2 tables above in order to do this.
- (2 points) Is the crude RR that you calculated in the previous problem, statistically significant? How did you determine this?
- (2 points) Based on your previous responses, does gender modify or confound the observed association? How did you determine this?
- (2 points) In this instance, what study result(s) should be reported?
