Difference/Relationship Between Goals and Objectives
An objective can be described as a desired outcome that can be measured and is precise (Jasper et al., 2013). Objectives are typically obtained in a short period of time, and it is in relation to a goal that has been set (Jasper et al., 2023). A goal can be described as an overall outcome. Goals are typically broad statements that are long term and can be life long, while objects are short outcomes that are measurable and has a limited time frame (Jasper et al., 2013). Goals and objectives are with in direct correlation of each other because they work together to help complete one common goal. When a targeted goal is attempted to be met there are objectives that are completed while attempting to accomplish the long-term goal. Goals can include several objectives. Objectives are typically formatted using SMART goals (Jasper et al., 2013). Objectives are typically specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time sensitive. Goals are typically incapable of being measured and is not quantifiable.
Difference Between Project/Professional Goals and Objectives
Project goals can be defined as a broad long-term goal that can be related to a specific project (Bailey, 2017). Project goals are typically related to the end results of a project. The project goals can be defined as the overall result of the project. Project objectives can be defined as milestones that are met which aids in the achievement of the overall goal. A project objective can be defined as a specific perceptible, short-term outcome that is directly related to a project (Bailey, 2017).
Professional Goals are typically career oriented. Professional goals are typically long-term goals that are set to benefit one career. Professional goals are typically made up of achieving new skill sets and milestones within the career. They are typically personalized long-term goals (Bailey, 2017). They are not really time specific and not measurable (Bailey, 2017).
Professional Objectives- Professional Objectives are personal milestone that are set that is related to one's development (Cope & Murray, 2018). Professional objectives are typically measurable goals that have timeframes (Bailey, 2017). They are typically related to career or personal accomplishments. Professional objectives are typically measurable and uses SMART goals to shape the overall success of the objective (Bailey, 2017).
Three Professional Development Goals
To assure that I have a successful career in informatics, my overall goal would be to become an effective communicator, become an effective knowledgeable leader, and to increase my ability to analyze HIT and fix HIT issues. The nursing informatics scope of practice stated that NI's should ensure that, "collaboration is an integral characteristic of practice (ANA, 2015)." To fulfill this commitment, I must better my communication skills. To become an effective leader, I will assess and evaluate other successful leaders within my practicum setting to determine what areas I should personally improve on. I will also engage in shadowing during leadership meetings within my practicum site to gain knowledge on how to become a successful leader. According to the ANA, "the registered nurse leads within the professional practice setting and the profession (ANA, 2015)." To assure that I can analyze HIT, I will shadow my preceptor and read peer viewed research to determine the correct steps to effectively analyze HIT. I will be sure to attend frequent meetings with my preceptor to assure that I have a strong knowledge base.
