DIODE CHARACTERISTICS & LOAD LINES / OPERATING POINTS PROCEDURE
1) For the (3) types of diodes specified, construct the circuit depicted in Figure 1 and experimentally develop the v-i curve for the diode for the forward-bias region of the plot. * You must measure or calculate, and record VD, ID and VS. * VS should be varied from 0.5 to 5V, with at least 5 data points b/w 0.5V to 1V and then 2V, 3V, 4V, 5V.
2) For the (3) types of diodes specified, construct the circuit depicted in Figure 2 and experimentally develop the v-i curve for the diode for the reverse-bias region of the plot. * You must measure or calculate, and record VD, ID and VS. * VS should be varied from 0.5 to 5V, with at least 10 data points and however many additional data points as * necessary for the zener diode to develop the curve.
3) Plot the (3) v-i curves you developed in your notebook. * Your plot should be scaled as well as possible. Consider using a page in a landscape orientation. * X-axis should have values from -5V to 5V. Y-axis should have values from -5 mA to 5 mA * You can plot all 3 curves on a single graph.
4) On the graph developed in Step 3, plot system curves for the circuit depicted in Figure 1 for VS = 5V and VS= 3V and graphically determine the operating point for the system for each load (diode). * For a Thevenin circuit, the system curve will be a straight line from the Open Circuit Voltage (VOC) on the x-axis * to the Short Circuit Current (ISC) on the y-axis. * The operating point occurs at the intersection of the System Curve and the load-line (v-i curve) for each load * (diode).
5) Confirm that your graphically determined operating points from Step 4, match the system performance you 1. measured in Step 1.
6) On the graph developed in Step 3, plot the system curve for the circuit depicted in Figure 3. (Hint: Thevenize the circuit first) Determine graphically the theoretical operating point for this circuit with any one of your diodes as the load. Construct the circuit and confirm that the system operates at the operating point you determined graphically.
7) For the circuit depicted in Figure 3, determine and plot on your graph the load line (v-i curve) for a 1k resistor load. From your plot determine the operating point for the system/load. Construct the circuit and confirm that the system operates at the operating point you determined graphically.
8) For the (3) types of diodes specified, note from the datasheets provided the following information: * Min, Max and Typical Forward Voltages * Reverse/Zener Breakdown Voltages * Maximum Power Rating
