Directions Find an informational article or nonction essay that has an obvious purpose and point of view. Describe these elements of the article, using textual evidence to explain how you were able to identify the text's purpose and point of view. The elements to include in your article assessment are outlined below. - Author's Purpose: Is the author hoping to entertain readers with an amusing story, inform readers about a specific event, or persuade readers to agree with a particular point of view? Figure out the author's real reason for creating the text, and then explain how he or she tried to achieve this purpose. . Author's Point of View: Sometimes point of view is very easy to identify, such as a noted environmentalist writing about the need to save the polar ice cap. Other times point of view may be more difficult to figure out. Explain what stake the author has in writing the text and how much the author's point of view might have inuenced the content of the article or essay. . Structure and Devices: Notice how the writer puts the article together. Are there words that have specic connotations that may influence how readers react to the message? Is the text organized to lead readers to a specific conclusion? Is the evidence one-sided to persuade the reader or balanced with the intent of informing? . Textual Evidence: It is not enough simply to note the author's purpose, point of view, and how he achieved it. You must also provide specific evidence from the text to support your comments.
