Plato's Symposium talks of love and beauty, but we as English speakers reading a translation can undoubtedly run into difficulty understanding his exact meaning. A word can mean different things in different contexts; a reader can easily misunderstand a translated text if they are unaware of a word's intended meaning. When Plato, writing in the voice of Socrates, speaks of the love and beauty of education, he is talking about a noble devotion to society and the world. For Plato, education should fully prepare learners for noble intellectual and social pursuits. A love of education is meant to teach pupils how to be truly appreciative of and devoted to accomplishing something great.

Without the support and guidance of education, Plato deeply fears that a student might never learn what he is capable of. This also explains the emphasis that Socrates and Plato place on education that leads the student toward meaningful insight or action. In the Symposium, Agathon is a skillful and award-winning playwright, but Socrates strongly critiques and refutes everything he says.
