Plato's Symposium talks of love and beauty, but we as English speakers reading a translation can undoubtedly run into difficulty understanding his exact meaning. A word can mean different things in different contexts; a reader can easily misunderstand a translated text if they are unaware of a word's intended meaning. When Plato, writing in the voice of Socrates, speaks of the love and beauty of education, he is talking about a noble devotion to society and the world. For Plato, education should fully prepare learners for noble intellectual and social pursuits.
