When completing the vignettes, there is a vignette assumption. That is, when reading assume that a full assessment has been done and no mention means 'no evidence'. This is the standard quality assurance if it is not documented it does not exist assumption. What that means, then if there is no mention of a need, the rating should be a '0'. If there is no mention of a strength, then the rating should be a '3'. So, no mention of any suicidality would result in a rating of '0' on Suicide Risk. No mention of any talents or interests would result in a rating of '3' on Talents/Interests. Another way to think about it is that you start the assessment with all 0 ratings on the Needs and all 3 ratings on the Child/Youth Strength and then you look for evidence to adjust your scores accordingly using the action levels. Caregiver ratings use the Need action levels for the vignettes. Ordinarily certain items would have an N/A option (for example Job Functioning for an underage child, or Foster Caregiver for a child not in foster care). For the purposes of this test please rate such items as '0' for needs and as '3' for strengths. Good luck!

Tanner is a 29-year-old male who is married to Jill and living in a trailer at a campground. Tanner was recently picked up on DUI charges and has lost his license to drive for the next six months, and his wife must now drive him around every day. Tanner and Jill often get into loud arguments over Tanner's excessive drinking and recent DUI charge. Jill says Tanner does not think about consequences when he gets into the car drunk. Tanner denies behaving impulsively but does admit that his judgment does become impaired when he drinks. Tanner and his friends play pool weekly at the bar. Jill wishes he would play at a friend's house so he would not be as tempted to buy alcoholic drinks. Tanner is a mechanic, but just recently lost his job due to missing work and coming in late. Tanner dropped out of high school when he was 16 and feels like it is too late to get his GED. Tanner and Jill have moved several times over the last year due to lack of jobs. Tanner states that he does not go to bed until 2 or 3 in the morning and is then back up by 7 or 8. Since Tanner is unemployed and can't drive during the day, he has been handling all the household responsibilities while Jill is at work. Jill states that most of their arguments are about Tanner's drinking and that she feels like she does not know what to do or say to help him. Tanner does not feel like he has a drinking problem but does admit he wishes that he and Jill did not fight so much. Jill wants him to get help, but she cannot talk to him about it without getting upset. Tanner and Jill do not attend church, nor do they have religious or spiritual beliefs. Tanner has been unable to hold down a steady job over the last three years due to his drinking. However, due to his great people skills (and his being good at his job), he has been able to use his connections with friends (and friends of friends) to help him find a new job, so he is never out of work for very long. Tanner is very good at painting cars and talks about starting his own car detailing business. Some days Tanner is very excited about owning his own business, while other days he complains that it will never happen because no one will give him a break. Tanner's new landlord has a friend who owns a body shop who may have a job for Tanner. Tanner believes if he had his high school diploma he could do well with his own business. Tanner gets along well with people generally and is very close with the friends that he plays pool with; however, his friends do not help Tanner address his drinking problem because they drink like he does. Tanner admits to feeling down at times and wishing he had done more with his life. When he fights with Jill, he can become mean and say hurtful things to Jill. During these episodes, Jill tells Tanner to leave the house until he calms down.Jill wants him to quit drinking because of his drinking and driving, but Tanner does not admit to it being a problem and refuses to take suggestions on participating in any services or even support groups like AA. Jill is afraid when Tanner drinks because his recklessness places himself and others in danger. She takes some comfort in the fact that he does not drink every day.
