Discrete event simulation, or oftentimes referred to as DES, is used to simulate events occurring at specific and separable instances in time (Softwarism, 2022). DES can assist businesses with planning for various factors that impact operational efficiencies by focusing on reoccurrences over time. The model simulates past performance and behavior to help predict future occurrences to enable data driven decision making. An example of DES is evident in a study published by Lund University in 2002 (Hellstrom & Johnsson, 2002). The study was focused on the operational impact of installing wireless technology to supply chains to track products. Performance variables used were material handling efficiency, consumer services, inventory levels, and lead times. During the study, they were able to add and change variables to determine the impact of wireless tracking technology on the operation. Performance was measurable throughout the various stages from the producer, manufacturer, distribution centers, retail outlets, and finally, to the consumer (Hellstrom & Johnsson, 2002). The steps are common with an analysis that is aimed at providing decision making insight
