Questions are based on the case of M.
M is 35 years old. He was referred due to his major drinking problem, which his referring physician felt reflected deeply rooted personality problems. M did not see himself as a problem drinker at first; however, after attending AA sessions, he realized that he is an alcoholic, and he now attends meetings and is remaining sober.
M's early childhood was tumultuous. His mother died when he was 8, and his father sent him to boarding school in another state at that time because he felt unable to cope with M. His father is still living, but M does not have much contact with him. He realizes now that his father (and grandfather) both drank significantly throughout his life. M has no siblings or other close family members. In school, he was a quiet young man who tried to do what others expected of him. He struggled with reading and writing. M was better in sports than he was at academics but still seemed to be alone a lot of the time.
M married three times; all three wives left him due to his drinking and the other effects of his alcoholism - getting fired from several jobs, being an uninvolved father and being abusive to his wives and children (physically and emotionally). He has three children (one from each marriage). He sees the children rarely. M now reports feeling bitter, sad, and hopeless about having a loving relationship with any woman. He feels that all of his wives (and his mother) left him just when he most needed them.
M also feels angry towards the bosses who fired him instead of supporting him when he needed help. He feels the same way towards male friends who have not maintained contact with him due to his continued drinking.
1. List two factors in M's life that illustrate any two of the following factors: biological, social, cultural, psychodynamic, humanistic, cognitive, or behavioral.List the factor first, then your observation. Your response would look like this: BIOLOGICAL -both his father and grandfather were alcoholics, which suggests a genetic connection.(OK, so I did that one for you.)POST THESE TWO EXAMPLES BY MAY 28 MIDNIGHT.
2. After you have identified your two examples, respond to one of your peers.Your response can be an extension of what they said ("Yes, and he also might have had brain damage from all the alcohol, so there's another biological factor in his current situation.") It could also be a question like "Does his shyness seem like it might be related to temperament, so that would be biological too?"You don't have to know all the answers! The point is to practice applying the perspectives to people to see how they work.POST YOUR RESPONSE BY MAY 30 MIDNIGHT.
