Discuss the legal issues raised in the following issue.

Mrs. Johnson is a patient in Mount Sanai Hospital in New Jersey. She is only 36 years old and has one young child. She has gone into a comma. There is some hope that research will lead to a cure for her condtion. She is not able to feel pain. She is not aware of her environment. She is unable to carryout any communication or understand any. Feeding is done via a gastric feeding tube. Her husband has asked to have the feeding tube removed so that she would starve to death. Mrs Johnson's child wants her kept alive. With the gastric feeding tube in place, Mrs. Johnson can live indefinitely at a high financial cost. Three weeks prior to the onset of the illness, Mrs. Johnson told her friend Jada that she wanted to live as long as possible and did not believe in stopping any form of treatment in any way.

Mrs. Johnson's parents came forward with a Health Care Proxy form signed by Mrs. Johnson whilst she was in the hospital and whilst heavily medicated, naming her mother as the Health Care Proxy. The mother is the beneficiary of the patient's life insurance policy.
