• A supervisor harasses a subordinate. The subordinate complains directly to the supervisor. The supervisor fires the subordinate.
• The plaintiff burns tires in front of her employer's factory to protest racial discrimination. The defendant-employer later fires the plaintiff.
• The plaintiff sends critical and scathing letters to the newspaper about discrimination at the defendant's plants. Later the defendant fires the plaintiff.
• Plaintiff complains about a supervisor's sexual harassment and defendant transfers her to a less prestigious but equally paid position.
• Plaintiff complains about harassment. Defendant investigates and places a mild letter of reprimand in the supervisor's file, transfers plaintiff to a smaller office away from the harasser, and does nothing when plaintiff's co-workers, who all know of the harassment, harass her in small ways about her complaint.
