Discussion 2 -Myth Makers

40 40 unread replies. 40 40 replies.

As you could see in chapter 1 there is the life course of a crime in the news and also a way the news is put together. For example a sensational or bizarre story hits the news (here is your theme) then they wait until something similar happens again, the third time the game is on. And the whole adage "If it Bleeds it Leads"... From there they "crime wave" or less serious a "crime theme." That theme is then repeated in the news from there you will start to see it in Docu-dramas such as anything on the ID channel and shows like "America's Most Wanted," and John Walsh's new show "On the Hunt." "On the Hunt" is particularly interesting, like "America's Most Wanted" it features fugitives that are suspected of committing mainly murder, guilty until proven innocent. The way the show is set up is in the docu-drama genre or dramatizations of what the police, the producers think happened. So in some cases where there are no witnesses etc...they just fill in the blanks even though that may not be how it actually took place. Then we will start to see the "theme" in the tabloids like Buzzfeed and TMZ.

I say all that to give you a context for your discussion board. After watching the movie "Nightcrawler" and reading Chapter 1....

1. Who is the most powerful Mythmaker in your opinion and why? You can use your text and PPTs for reference as well as the movie or any of the articles posted from week 2. I lump social media in with media as it is defiantly an influencer in this day in age, so you can include that as well even though your book does not discuss it, because of it's age. But it is also a separate/different impact than some of your major news sources so try to make that distinction in your discussion.

2. Find and give a real life example of your Mythmaker creating a crime myth as described above.

I also need references, please.
