Currently health care in the United States is based on a for-profit system of compensation (both in health care provision and insurance).Recently, Pennsylvania saw a significant conflict emerge between Highmark BC/BS and UMPC (the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center). These two institutions dominate the health care market in Pittsburgh, and a majority of the population uses one of the two (or both) for their health care, and the conflict has produced backlash from the local community as they find their ability to see their doctors hindered (see here).
