Discussion Forum - The Court System AV CASE: Julius, born and raised in Seattle, Washington, joined the US. Army at the age of eighteen and eventually was selected to serve in Army Special Forces. After ten years of honorable service, Julius decided to leave the army and move back home to Seattle, Washington. Unable to nd work, Julius traveled to Los Angeles, California. After one week, Julius landed a Job with Anthony Enterprises (AE). AE specializes in providing armed support to the rich and famous. Julius' rst assignment was to protect the daughter of a wealthy politician - Senator Brutus. Senator Brutus had received threats against himself, his wife and his daughter. Because the daughter (Cleo) was now in graduate school at California University, Julius was ordered to follow Cleo and keep her safe from all harm. Eventually, Julius and Cleo fell in love. Convinced he could no longer be objective, Julius quit his job with AE and moved back to Seattle - promising to bring Cleo with him as soon as he found a good job. Two weeks later (On March 15), there was a knock at Julius' front door. Julius opened the door and there, to his surprise, stood Senator Brutus. Before Julius could say a word, Senator Brutus punched Julius in the nose. "That's for stealing my daughter's heart!" bellowed Senator Brutus. The blow on the nose caused Julius to lose balance and fall over. Unfortunately, Julius landed on the sharp edge of an old stone replace. The fall caused Julius to lose consciousness. After being rushed to the hospital, it was discovered that stone pieces broke off the replace and pierced Julius' face, neck and shoulders. Julius spent two weeks in the Critical Care Unit and another three weeks in recovery. The doctors told Julius that he would never see again out of his left eye and that he would need to undergo a series of surgeries to repair the damage to his face, neck and shoulders. There were no other injuries. The doctors told Julius that he could go back to work as soon as the surgeries were complete. They expected this process to take about three more months. After his discharge from the hospital, Julius met with his attorney, Ides Of'march, who led a lawsuit against Senator Brutus for assault, battery, and intentional iniction of emotional distress. Julius is seeking $1.2 million in damages. Julius led his lawsuit in the Federal District Court for Western Washington. 1. Is there \"subject matterjurisdiction"? Explain your reasoning. 2.
