Discussion Question 1: Interpreting Condence Intervals We must take care that we are accurately interpreting the results of our condence intervals. Consider the scenarios described below: We want to nd the average height of adult men in the United States. We choose a SRS of 36 adult men from the US and perform a 95% condence interval. Using this procedure we nd that their average height is 70 :t 0.52 in. (1) (2) (3) (4) Student A says: This means that if we pick an adult man from the US at random, there is a 95% chance that he is between 69.48 inches tall and 70.52 inches tall. Student B says: This means that 95% of the men from US will have heights between 69.48 inches and 70.52 inches. Student C says: This means that if we pick another SRS of 36 adult men from the US, there is a 95% of the chance that the average height of the men in that sample is between 69.48 inches tall and 70.52 inches. Student D says: This means that we are 95% condent that all men from the US will have heights between 69.48 inches and 70.52 inches. Student E says: If we were to repeat this experiment many times, each with a sample size of 36, we would get a different condence interval each time, all with very similar margin of errors. Some of these intervals will contain the population mean (Le. the parameter) and some won't. All we can say for sure is that if we repeated this experiment many many times, approximately 95% of the condence intervals we would make in this way would contain the average height of all adult men from the US. Comment on the above ve students1 interpretation. Whose understanding of condence interval is good? Whose is bad? Help straighten these students out with your insightful remarks. According to the US. Bureau of Statistics, the mean height of American men is 69.1 inches. How can we reconcile this with the results of our survey
