Discussion Questions

1. "Should car owners be required to have winter tires in Ontario?" Research "winter tires" and learn why friction is important in various conditions. Some provinces require that drivers have winter tires on their vehicles during the winter. Laws like this have social, economic, and environmental impacts. While you complete the research, complete the following "six hats" table. In this activity, you will consider the issue from six different perspectives (a different perspective for each different coloured hat). Make notes under each colour to help you understand the issue from a variety of perspectives.

Include 2-4 bullet points per hat.

White Hat. Factual perspective. In this space, make point-form notes on the facts. Only facts, no opinions.
Yellow Hat. Positive perspective. In this space, make notes from a positive (optimistic) perspective regarding this issue.
Black Hat. Negative perspective. In this space, play the devil's advocate, or make notes from a negative perspective (against). What might go wrong? What are the downsides?
Red Hat. Emotional perspective. In this space, make notes about your own feelings, instincts, and ideas.
Green Hat. Creative perspective. This is the space to be creative. Are there other options? Creative solutions? Any new ideas you may have?
Blue Hat. Reflective perspective. This is the perspective of monitoring the process. Do the best to ensure that you have considered the five different perspectives. Review your notes above. Reflect here - did you consider the issue from all of the different perspectives? Could you have improved your process at all?
