DISCUSSION ONE

Seniors can help shape policy in a time of economic constraint by volunteer opportunities. Volunteering offers community help without having to pay for it. Being willing to volunteer without pay will help the economy in times when it's needed. Seniors need to keep in mind that younger generations have a lot of power in politics and younger generations are the uprising of the future. It is best to work together with younger generations rather than to make them the enemy. As seniors begin to retire, they can broaden their impact with civic engagement by volunteering, becoming part of school boards, and supporting local politics. I talked to my dad about this discussion because he is retiring in the next couple weeks. He says he wants to become more involved in local politics such as city counsels, local government agencies, school boards, and volunteering in the things he enjoys and teaching classes or giving advice. I think seniors have a lot of things they can do to become more involved, especially when they have the time.

DISCUSSION TWO

Seniors can help shape policy by sharing their knowledge and personal experiences. They have lived through life. They have seen, heard and done many things that can be shared and used to make the society better. They need to keep in mind the level of poverty throughout the years, and how to help lower the percentage of poverty in the U.S. They need to keep in mind how hard it has been to find quality healthcare or insurance. They also need to keep in mind how hard it has been or can be to find employment. To broaden their impact through civic engagement, they can continue to stay informed. They can join local groups and continue to vote. Attend meetings and engage in creating these civic spaces.

DISCUSSION THREE

Seniors have a valuable role in shaping policy during times of economic constraint. One way they can make an impact is by advocating for their needs and concerns through organizations and advocacy groups. They can join forces with other seniors to form coalitions and increase their collective influence. It's important for seniors to consider intergenerational issues as they work towards their political goals. They should be mindful of the potential impact of their policy proposals on younger generations. Seniors can bridge the gap by seeking common ground and collaborating with younger people on initiatives that benefit both age groups. Civic engagement is key for seniors to broaden their impact. They can participate in local and national elections, voice their opinions through letters and calls to elected officials, and attend community meetings. By staying informed and actively involved, seniors can ensure their voices are heard and their concerns are taken into account. Additionally, seniors can mentor and share their knowledge and experiences with younger generations. This fosters understanding and respect across age groups. By engaging in intergenerational activities, such as volunteering together or participating in community projects, seniors can create a positive impact on society as a whole. In summary, seniors can shape policy in times of economic constraint by advocating for their needs and collaborating with younger generations. Civic engagement and intergenerational involvement are key to broadening their impact. Through these efforts, seniors can contribute to a more inclusive and equitable society for people of all ages.

DISCUSSION FOUR

I believe seniors play a crucial role in helping to shape policy. This can be done in many ways. Their abundance of experience, knowledge, and advocacy can significantly impact decision-making processes. A few ways I believe seniors can actively contribute is through advocacy groups and organizations. Here they would focus on issues that are important to them and their generation. They can also actively participate in elections which would help to ensure that those potentially elected would prioritize their concerns. And as I have mentioned in previous discussion posts towards the seniors, the seniors could volunteer with younger generations, and share their knowledge and experience to help bridge generational gaps. Intergenerational issues often involve balancing the needs of the older and younger generations. We all need to work on addressing both sides of concerns to achieve political goals effectively and maintain social connectedness. Seniors can broaden their impact through increased civic engagement by implementing some ideas such as mentoring the younger generation, volunteering in their community which is a hands on approach and can teach valuable lessons to those around them. They can also work on keeping up with the technology changes and advancements that we are faced with. According to Novak, "Today, older people work to better society through thousands of voluntary organizations" (654). By doing this, the older people are sharing their knowledge and experience with everyone they are coming in contact with. This will give those people lessons they would not be able to learn any other way. The older generation has so much wealth of knowledge to share with the upcoming generations. If they don't share this knowledge, it will be forever lost.
