Discussion Topic: Transgender Rights Many of, if not most, if not all, of you are at least somewhat aware of the debate over transgender woman swimmer Lia Thomas. E California law recognizes "gender expression" and "gender identity" as a protected category. Consequently, discrimination against a transgender person, because that person is transgender, is illegal. Arguably on the other hand, Federal law as embodied in Title IX E_was, among other things, designed to create equality in collegiate sports which, back in the day, was pretty much a male exclusive thing. As a result of Title IX there are now myriad collegiate women's sports (e.g., NCAA Women's BB Championship) on an equal footing with, and is some cases more popular than, men's sports. This is a contentious issue and some states are passing laws to prevent transgender girls/women from competing against biological girls/women. Ex Assignment Objective Conduct whatever additional research you would like and then consider the question of the propriety of transgender men competing against biological women at any, or all, levels of competition. Review and consider the pro and con positions. Decide whether, in your opinion, transgender men should be allowed to compete against biological women or, for that matter, the other way around. Should the law allow for that and, if so, should there be any limitations? Should a line be drawn in discrimination law so that it would not be allowed? This is a very hotly debated issue as we speak, and you're about to jump into it! Directions Think about these serious questions. Then post your thoughtful opinion. Be sure to take the time to explain your position. Be specific. Everyone has an opinion, but not everyone can explain why they believe what they believe. Make it your goal to organize your thoughts, and be sure to consider the alternative arguments when expressing your opinion. In other words, I am most interested in the why part of your answer. Bear in mind that in order to make a good argument, it's not enough to explain your position. You also need to explain why the opposite side is "wrong."
