Division is a means of analysis. Division clarifies complex subjects by separating them into parts. History, for example, is a vast and complex subject which must be divided into parts to be understood in any significant ways. The vast subject of "history" can be divided in any number of ways: By geographical areas - Canadian, American, Russian, British etc. By chronological periods - centuries, decades, years into major military events - World War 1, World War II, the Napoleonic Wars etc. By technological advances - Stone Age, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Silicon Age By famous people - Elizabethan, Georgian, Victorian etc. By modes of transportation - foot, bicycle, train, car, plane etc. The purpose of a good division essay is to illuminate seemingly simple or familiar subjects - to make us look at subjects with new eyes - by separating them in new or unexpected or unconventional or humorous ways. Your first day at school or university or in a new job, for example, is a relatively simple and familiar subject, but it could be divided in ways that make us understand (or remember) something new about the experience: e.g., a student's first day at school (or university or at a new job) is part anxiety, part boredom, part despair, part excitement, and so on. By dividing the subject according to emotional experiences, you can make a new insight into one's first day at school. A house -again, a familiar subject (or object) - can be divided into rooms, kitchen, family room, bedrooms, etc., but these divisions are familiar and show a lack of insight. A more interesting way to divide a house might be according to how you use the spaces of a house in your interactions with others: the areas where you meet with the outside world by entertaining visitors the areas where you play, talk, or argue with your family the areas where you withdraw from all social contact the areas where you interact with your most intimate acquaintances (a) Your first sentence of the introduction should be a general topic sentence that clearly

relates the essay back to the essay question and or topic you have chosen to argue. You should

give the name of the author(s) and the name of the text(s) you will be analyzing in your paper.

(b) Your introduction should contain the main argument of your essay i.e. what you will

prove in your paper - your thesis. In addition to your thesis statement, you need to give a

breakdown of the main examples you will use to prove your argument. Thus, your thesis will end

up being a road map for your entire paper and will be several sentences long.

(c) Use the last sentence of the introduction to foreshadow your paper's conclusion. Try to

have this last sentence be an observation of something interesting or even a secondary argument

that you will prove in your paper through your analysis.
