Fallacies Self-Assessment

Directions: Reflect on each question before answering. Your answers should be in complete paragraphs (4-5 sentences), (Remember Mantra 4 to Think in "Paragraphs"). If you answer the questions fully with at least a full paragraph (4-5 sentences) for each set of questions, then you earn full points. If your answer is less than a paragraph or miss a question, then you earn half points for that set of questions. If you are missing one of the two paragraphs, then you earn 0 points for that response. Add space as needed.

In this module we learned about many different formal fallacies. This assignment offers an opportunity to reflect on personal behaviors. Examples of fallacies we learned include false dilemma, poisoning the well, ad hominem, red herring, false cause, slippery slope, appeal to pity, appeal to authority, and hasty generalization.

Pick 2 fallacies that you think you are highly prone to commit (from the list above ). In 1 full paragraph for each fallacy, do the following (2 full paragraphs/1 full page total).

Paragraph 1:

Explain the fallacy in your own words (Mantra 2 the Test of Understanding)

Give an example of a time you've been guilty of exhibiting this fallacy (Test of Understanding)

Finally, as you start to recognize how and when you commit this fallacy, reflect on what you might do differently going forward to avoid this fallacy (Growth Mindset)

Paragraph 2: Repeat the same 3 parts above for a second fallacy (define, give an example, and reflect on what you might do differently in the future).
