Understand the complex role of a correctional officer, and identify their daily activities. 4. Explain the variety of activities and situations that cause personal stress to correctional officers. 5. Give examples of the roles and activities of prison counselors and case managers. 6. Compare and contrast the roles of probation and parole officers, and describe the variations in supervision styles. 7. Summarize the types of staff responsibilities that there are in community residential centers. 8. Identify the variety of ways in which contract staff and volunteers complement the role of full-time staff in prisons. 9. Describe why staff diversity is important for correctional agencies. 10. Explain the legal decisions impacting the work of females in male prisons, and the challenges that women face in this type of workplace. INTRODUCTION Part 2 of this text examines the management of correctional staff and the critical role that staff play in the operations and accomplishment of the mission for a correctional agency. "Corrections" is often thought of as bars and fences, prison cells, and violent offenders. However, the most valuable resource of a correctional agency is its people: the staff are far more important than secure prison construction. policies and procedures, or technology. Corrections is a people business, in that the work of corrections is accomplished by people. staff supervising offenders to carry out the sentencing orders of the courts. and monitoring and guiding behavior in what will hopefully be a crime-free and productive completion of a criminal sentence. The four chapters in Part 2 provide students an understanding of some of the key activities that must occur in agencies to find, develop, and supervise staff.
